It is also the seat of the Quito Metropolitan District, home to 2 million residents. As the headquarters of the newly-formed Union of South American Nations, Quito is also the de facto capital of South American integration.

Because of this physical beauty, its traditions, mystic corners, valuable legends, it is considered " Reliquary of the American Art". Because of this main characteristics, in November of 1978 was the first city in the world declared by UNESCO: Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
